About the Item

John Murray Thompson R.S.A (1885-1974) A mother and pups signed 'J Murray Thompson -' (lower left) Oil on canvas Painting Size - 18 x 24 in Framed Size - 22 1/2 x 28 1/2 in Provenance With The Parker Gallery, London; The Collection of Charlie Watts. Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. John Murray Thomson was a Scottish artist celebrated for his finely observed animal paintings, delicate watercolours, and graceful depictions of birds and wildlife. Born in 1885, Thomson trained at the Edinburgh College of Art and furthered his studies in Paris—experiences that shaped his refined, elegant style. A quiet master of his craft, Thomson became best known for his animal and bird studies, which combined scientific accuracy with artistic sensitivity. His watercolours in particular revealed a subtle control of tone and detail, often portraying his subjects in calm, balanced compositions that evoked the quiet dignity of the natural world. Birds, deer, foxes, and other woodland creatures featured prominently in his work, often rendered with a gentle touch and an eye for their characteristic movements. Thomson was elected a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy (R.S.A.), a testament to the respect he earned among his peers. He exhibited widely throughout his career, particularly in Scotland, and his work was admired for its clarity, precision, and understated beauty. In addition to painting, Thomson was also active as a teacher and illustrator, helping to cultivate an appreciation for nature and draughtsmanship in younger generations. His illustrations for natural history publications and educational works further reflected his deep engagement with wildlife and the Scottish landscape. John Murray Thomson passed away in 1974, leaving behind a body of work that continues to speak to the quiet poetry of nature. His legacy lies in his ability to capture the stillness, grace, and character of animals with a refined and timeless touch.

Mother dog and her puppies, 19th Century French Barbizonf armhouse painting
Located in Norwich, GB
An charming 19th century dog painting depicting a mother dogue and her exuberant topsy turvy pups by the farmhouse barns or cowsheds , with a young child given them a fuss! Dating from ca 1860-70, the oil on canvas is unsigned, but bears on the verso a rather special stamp from colour and artists supplies merchant Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922). Paul Durand-Ruel is known as the legendary art dealer who launched, almost single handedly, the Impressionist movement. He represented Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir in his Paris, London and New York Galleries. Like his father Jean Marie Durand, Durand Ruel had started as both a merchant of art supplies, and dealer. Often, these two activities overlapped, as he would supply cash strapped artists who left paintings as security. Paul Durand Ruel was one of the first to discover Barbizon artist...
