About the Item
Julien Dupre 1851 -1910, was a French realist landscape painter. Dupre was a realist painter of the working classes including unskilled manual farm labourers which included both men and women. He was born in Paris into a working class family background which seems to have inspired him to paint the familiar which was popular with the French, English and American collectors.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon and his paintings were in demand from some of the biggest art dealers of their day, Arthur Tooth in London, Goupil in Paris and Knoedler in New York. This picture is a early 20th Century copy of his painting ' The white cow ', which is clearly very well painted by an accomplished artist and certainly in artistic skills is equal to Dupre, the name of the painter is unknown, and the painting is unsigned, however there is a label to the reverse from a frame maker in Ireland and a stamp from a stretcher supplier from France and we believe that the painter could well originate from there, there are areas in the lower section of the picture that may well contain a signature and if we are able to extract as such we shall amend the description. This picture is in it's original frame and the frame and the painting has been restored, this painting is as quoted earlier, unsigned.
I have included a further biography of Julien Dupre for your interest.
Julien Dupré (1851–1910) was a prominent French Realist painter celebrated for his masterful depictions of rural life and animals, particularly cattle. Born in Paris, he originally apprenticed as a lace maker but turned to art after the Franco-Prussian War closed his family’s shop. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Isidore Pils and Henri Lehmann before refining his style in Picardy under Désiré François Laugée, whose daughter he later married.
The White Cow (La Vâche Blanche)
One of Dupré's most acclaimed works is The White Cow (1890), which solidified his reputation as a premier animalier (animal painter).

Salon Success: The painting was a highlight of the 1890 Paris Salon, where critics praised it as one of the finest examples of the French School.
Artistic Merit: Prolific critic Marion Spielmann described the cow as "superbly drawn," noting its "patient and intelligent interest" in the milking process.
Style and Detail: The work exemplifies Dupré’s ability to combine Naturalism with a luminous, energetic style. It features a large-scale, powerful central figure of a cow, often accompanied by a milkmaid, set against a dynamic sky and a richly textured landscape.
Current Location: The original oil on canvas (measuring approximately 116 × 153.5 cm) is part of the collection at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Legacy and Achievements
Throughout his career, Dupré "championed the life of the peasant," imbuing agricultural labor with a sense of dignity and heroic scale. His accolades included:
Gold Medal: Awarded at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair (Exposition Universelle).
Legion of Honor: Inducted in 1892, the highest French order of merit.
International Influence: His work was widely popular in the United States, where it remains well-represented in museums like the Columbia Museum of Art and the Worcester Art Museum.
