About the Item
Manipur was the original birthplace of polo in India. The game was played with seven players to a side and points were scored by seeing who could knock the ball out of the field of play on either end of the field. Unlike today’s more modern polo this was much different because there were no goalposts and also everyone could play the game. It was common to see anyone and everyone playing polo back then in Manipur, as long as you had a horse to use you could play. The horses that were used for the game were the traditional Manipur ponies. They are different from most horses and are relatively shorter. Hodge does a great job showing the player and his horses in this image, and the attire that he is dressed in correlates with what was traditionally worn during matches.
