The daughter of theater scenery and landscape painter Russell Smith (1812–1896) and his wife, flower painter Mary Priscilla Wilson Smith (1819–1874), Mary Russell Smith was born in Philadelphia. Raising chickens was her favorite pastime as a child, and when she was fourteen, she started painting them so well that her family urged her to pursue a career in art.
From 1859 to 1869 and from 1876 to 1878, Smith displayed her chicken paintings at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, which were highly sought after by Philadelphia art patrons. In 1868, she displayed two paintings at the National Academy of Design in New York, and in 1876, she had another at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. Smith never got married and had long-term health issues.
