About the Item
This folk art painting of a winter scene by Maud Lewis features a dog.
The iconic paintings of Maud Lewis—the beloved folk artist from Nova Scotia, whose cheerful, colourful artwork is held in many fine art collections around the world.
This bucolic winter scene was bought directly from the artist, circa 1960 and features a rare character in Lewis’s oeuvre—a dog. In this charming painting, a horse-drawn sleigh slides through the snow in the foreground, a lone dog running ahead of it. A covered bridge, wooden fencing, and a house in the background are framed by hills, a bright blue sky and evergreen trees. The vivid colour palette is classic Maud—tomato red, sunny yellow, rich green and crisp white with chocolate brown and black offering contrast.
“I used to ‘paint’ with Crayolas a lot. I guess I was practising.” Maud Lewis
“From time to time in the world of art, there emerges someone with extraordinary talent that sets them apart from their contemporaries and affords them a special place in the hearts of those who come in contact with the work. Maud Lewis was such an artist.” Lance Woolaver, Canadian author
Maud Lewis was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1901. She was never formally trained as an artist, but as a young child used to paint Christmas cards with her mother. As an adult, she sold paintings from the house she shared with her husband for five dollars. Her happy paintings belied the hard, impoverished life she led—disfiguring birth defects and crippling arthritis that made it difficult to hold a paintbrush. Lewis died at age 69. The little one-room house was restored and is on permanent exhibit at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Her artwork is held there and in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Maud Lewis is the subject of several biographies and two National Film Board of Canada documentaries. In 2017, a biopic of Maud's life titled "Maudie" was released, starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke.

Maud Lewis
Renowned folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-1970) was known for her colourful paintings of life and the landscape of Digby, Nova Scotia. "A lot of her work was almost aspirational of a simpler time where you would see depictions of horse-drawn carriages and sleigh rides in the snow, fields being plowed with oxen. It really depicted a happier, simpler life." Colin Stinson, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Despite the hardships of poverty and advancing arthritis, Maud was able to create a body of charming and cheerful paintings that belied her situation – the fluffy white and black cats, the jaunty sleighs on wintry roads, the oxen festooned with bells and more. Maud painted on whatever surface was available including clam shells, dust pans and the walls of her tiny home. Maud’s small house where she lived with her husband and worked since 1938 was restored and is on permanent exhibit at Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Her artwork is held there and in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. She is the subject several biographies and two National Film Board of Canada documentaries. In 2017, a biopic of Maud's life titled "Maudie" was released starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke.

Medium: Egg Tempera on Illustration Board

Charlotte Joan Sternberg was born in Meriden, Connecticut in 1920. Early on, she became interested in art, and her parents encouraged her efforts. She attended public schools in the area, as well as taking art classes at the technical school. Afterwards, she attended the Yale School of Art. Her fellow classmates included Rudolph Zallinger, who executed the dinosaur mural at the Peabody Museum in New Haven; Jean Day Zallinger, renowned book illustrator; and Edward Paier, founder of the Paier College of Art. It was there that she became interested in egg tempera, and most of her well-known artwork was done in this medium. She was one of a number of Yale artists who revived this medium.(She did not work professionally in oils, although she sometimes used gouache or watercolor.)
She went on to a long career in commercial illustration. She worked extensively for J.Walter Thompson, doing advertising art for such companies as Esso (later Exxon), Textron, and Lederle pharmaceuticals. While she did a variety of subjects, she was best known for her Americana themes, particularly snow scenes of historic New England. Many of these pieces were published as Christmas cards for American Artists Group. She also taught for many years at the Paier College of Art.
She also did a number of limited edition prints for Greenwich Workshop. Her art is used on such items as tapestry pillows, puzzles, and decorative flags. She was commissioned to do several portraits, including those of Gov.John Lodge...
