This serene subject, the Lambs' Creel relates to Minna Citron's mural project focusing on the Tennessee Valley Authority. It was such a new world to her. Here the liminal light, the animals, and the temporary enclosure --- the 'creel,' are almost magical.
It is signed and dated to the right of the creel.
A figurative artist with a sardonic edge, and an early modernist, Minna Citron was born in Newark, New Jersey. In 1928 she began to study at the Art Students League and in 1929 took her first studio, on Union Square, NY. In 1933 she moved across the Square to a studio that she maintained until her death. She lived nearby. With colleagues Isabel Bishop, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Reginald Marsh, she was part of the Fourteenth Street School.
