This acrylic painting on 400 g/m² Fabriano “Pittura” paper reinterprets the archetypal fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood through a surreal and symbolic lens. Nico Pearleyes transforms the familiar story into a darker, more enigmatic scene where myth, instinct, and transformation converge.
Set within a dense forest of crimson trees, a wolf emerges as both predator and totem. Its body twists into impossible shapes, suspended between menace and metamorphosis. The creature’s sharp teeth gleam beneath a burning sky, while the forest itself seems alive, vibrating with the same tension that animates the animal. This is not a literal retelling, but an exploration of the universal pattern embedded in this ancient narrative—one that has traveled across centuries and cultures, from medieval France to East Asia and Old Norse Edda poetry.
Pearleyes deconstructs these mythic roots to question what fairy tales conceal about fear, power, and desire. By dissolving the boundaries between predator and victim, he evokes the psychological spaces where human and animal consciousness meet. His formal language—merging Renaissance structure, Korean visual traditions, skateboard energy, and Pop Surrealist color—creates a charged atmosphere where each element seems at once familiar and uncanny.
The Little Red Riding Hood thus becomes a meditation on storytelling itself: how inherited narratives shape our perception of danger and transformation, and how art can reconfigure these stories into something new. Pearleyes’ practice, rooted in the dialogue between imagination and reality, finds here one of its most intense visual manifestations—a world where the act of seeing is inseparable from the act of reinterpretation.

Nico Pearleyes
Nico Pearleyes is a French painter based in Paris. He studied graphic design at Gobelins School in Paris and began painting during the 2020 lockdown, developing a personal language that merges Renaissance composition, Korean traditional art, skateboard culture, Post-Impressionism, and Pop Surrealism. His work often depicts surreal landscapes, symbolic animals, and dreamlike atmospheres, exploring the boundary between reality and imagination. Having lived between South Korea and the French Alps, his practice is deeply shaped by these cultural and natural environments. Through his paintings, Pearleyes questions how images influence our perception of the world and invites viewers to reconsider the narratives that define their reality.
