The standard bearer
By Jacques Francois Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines
Located in Genève, GE
Work on wood
Oil on panel depicting a lively military scene, attributed to Jacques Swebach, known as Swebach-Desfontaines (1769–1823), a French painter celebrated for his battle scenes, cavalry subjects, and historical genre compositions.
The painting features a mounted standard bearer leading a small group of cavalrymen, accompanied by figures on foot, advancing through an open landscape beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. The dynamic arrangement of figures, the expressive postures, and the detailed rendering of horses demonstrate the artist’s keen observational skills and narrative clarity—hallmarks of Swebach’s work.
The color palette is composed of warm browns, earthy ochres, and muted blue-grey tones, creating a balanced yet animated atmosphere. The handling of paint is fluid and confident, with careful modeling of the figures and a sensitive treatment of light, particularly in the sky. The composition reflects the strong influence of 17th-century Flemish and Dutch painting, which played a significant role in Swebach’s artistic formation.
Executed in oil on wooden panel, a support frequently used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries for such subjects, this attributed work displays strong decorative appeal and solid pictorial quality. It is well suited for collectors of Old Master paintings, military art, and European historical scenes from the Napoleonic era.

English early 19th century painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape
Located in Bath, Somerset
A painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape with a horse and rider accompanied by two hounds by a woodland river in the distance.
Signed and inscribed 'Melton Mowbray', lower left.
Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame.
John Ferneley Sr (1782-1860) was born the son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, the youngest of six children. He is known as one of the great British equine artists, perhaps only second to Stubbs in terms of raw ability.
Ferneley originally worked with his father, until by chance the Duke of Rutland saw some of his work on the side of a cart on which Ferneley and his father had been working. The Duke was so impressed with Ferneley that he persuaded John's father to allow him to become the pupil of Benjamin Marshall. Ferneley was so talented that apparently he produced almost perfect copies of his tutor's paintings and they were said to have been indistinguishable from the master’s. Marshall also enrolled him as a student of the Royal Academy Schools.
In 1804 Ferneley paid a man named Thomas Harrison...

‘Camelopard – a present from the Pacha of Egypt to the King – at Malta on its way to England’
Signed and dated C.F. de Brocktorff. / 1827. lower right, inscribed as titled in the painted margins lower centre. Pencil and watercolour heightened with gold paint and gum arabic on paper, 36.8 x 27.9 cm
A gift so majestic, it made kings blush, and a gift so grand, it would startle Europe into a craze. Pasha Muhammad Ali of Egypt (1805-1848) did it in 1827: he sent to Europe three magical spotted, horned creatures, each with a neck reaching the skies and legs as long as a house is high. One giraffe to King Charles X of France, one to Francis I of Austria and the most fabled one to King George IV of England. A curious sight for Europeans, who had not seen such a beast since the Medici giraffe in 1487.
Few animals created more of a stir in Europe than these royal...
