Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
Philip Eustace Stretton was born in 1865 and became one of Britain’s more cherished animal painters during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, his work has quietly endured, appreciated for its warmth, personality, and remarkable detail—especially when it came to his favorite subjects: dogs.
Stretton began exhibiting his work in the early 1880s, and by 1884 he was showing at the Royal Academy in London. He continued to do so for about 20 years, and during that time he built a solid reputation as an artist with a special eye for animals. His style drew heavily from the influence of Sir Edwin Landseer, the Victorian master known for imbuing animals with almost human expressions. Like Landseer, Stretton didn’t just paint animals—he gave them presence, emotion, and even a bit of soul.
Working in both oil and watercolor, Stretton often portrayed animals in homely or familiar settings: a pair of dogs curled by the fire, a loyal pup left in charge on a quiet beach, or borzois lounging on a lavish bearskin rug. His scenes often felt like quiet stories, full of tenderness and subtle humor. One of his better-known pieces, Left in Charge, shows a determined little black Pomeranian watching over a bathing machine on the sand—capturing not only the character of the dog but the mood of a moment. Another, Fireside Companions, brings the viewer into a cozy domestic space, where a collie rests peacefully by the hearth.
Stretton painted during a time when the relationship between people and animals—particularly dogs—was being reimagined. Pets were increasingly seen not just as workers or status symbols but as companions, friends, even family. His art perfectly echoed that cultural shift, celebrating the everyday bonds between animals and the people who loved them.
He continued working until his death in 1919. Today, many of his paintings are found in private collections, and occasionally turn up at auctions. While he may not be a household name, Philip Eustace Stretton left behind a legacy of gentle, heartfelt art that still speaks to anyone who’s ever known the quiet loyalty of a dog.
