About the Item

After Hector Hyppolite, Philomé Obin may be Haiti's most significant painter. In the present work, Philomé Obin creates an all-over pattern of harmoniously spaced elements with no central point of focus. There is a balance and proportionality to the pictorial elements, vegetable, animal, and mineral, that project a feeling of peaceful coexistence and hence the comparison to a Peaceable Kingdom theme. Signed lower right in Artist's monogram. Philome Obin (Haitian, 1892-1986) Une Savane, oil on masonite board. Framed. Size: 24'' x 30.25'', 61 x 76 cm (board); 24.75'' x 31'', 63 x 79 cm (frame). Provenance: Regine Chassagne Win Butler. Frame appears to be of the same period as the painting.
