About the Item
The Island Hunt in Ireland happens yearly at Killogy Castle in Ferns, and has been a tradition there for a long time. This piece by Phoebe Donovan depicts the master of the hunt with his hounds at one of the gates before the hunt. Fox hunting has a rich history in Ireland and in Europe as a whole. This tradition has become quite the spectacle, with patrons and viewers coming to watch every year, the sport has begun to gain some popularity again. Normally in huntsman paintings the subject of the image is shown on horseback, but Donovan uses this as a unique example of the subject being shown before the initial mount with his hounds.
