Ramona Schnekenburger is able to direct our gaze to the beauty of the present both personally and through her pictures. Small details, everyday situations and supposedly nothingness gain presence through the artist’s brush and pen. In doing so, she does not transfigure any realities, but encounters inconspicuous figures, ambivalent situations, or even bizarre-looking animals with a devotion to individuality. The artist’s gaze directs attention, creates meaning and relevance.
If at the beginning of the observation there is a tendency to give priority to technical processes and manual skills, the second level of observation is one that is detached from the concrete. Here the gaze of the beholder can remove several layers and subtract assignable from abstract subtleties. What is obviously recognizable takes a back seat, the sensual appearance of the picture becomes noticeable.
Oil paint, pencil and colored pencil are the preferred painting media that are applied to canvas, various types of paper, and sometimes wood.
For some time now, Ramona Schnekenburger has been working intensively on the design of the background. She experiments with different materials and surfaces. Reduced detail in favor of free space. Shadows and light, ups and downs are gaining in importance. Cracks and cracks – the structure and the character of the painting surface develop a dimension of their own in the artist’s visual language. Accidental and deliberate execution collide.
They are protracted processes in which the naturalistically carefully worked out forms and the subtly suggested backgrounds merge with one another.
In the works of the last few years, figures and details dissolved from the background, in the current phase they dissolve more and more. From dissolving to dissolving. Structures, influences, and the unconscious have been gaining more and more importance in the artist’s visual language since 2017.
This development also requires a differentiated, sensitive approach, and challenges us to delicacy to perceive change potential and change.
