About the Item

Attributed to Richard Aistrop (British, active 1880–1910) Portrait of a Wire-Haired Jack Russell Terrier Oil on board, circa 1890 In its original gilt frame Signed Bottom left This finely rendered Victorian portrait of a wire-haired Jack Russell Terrier exemplifies the precision and warmth associated with the English sporting painter Richard Aistrop. The small dog, painted in crisp profile against a softly mottled brown ground, exudes intelligence and quiet alertness—qualities that endeared the breed to country sportsmen of the late nineteenth century. Aistrop, who exhibited regularly in the 1880s and 1890s, specialised in intimate animal studies that combined technical mastery with a sense of affectionate observation. His dogs are never stiff or sentimental; rather, they possess a convincing presence born of direct familiarity. Here, the artist has modelled the terrier’s wiry coat with fine, delicate strokes, the white fur touched with subtle greys and warm russets, and the eye rendered with particular brilliance. The simple leather collar provides a note of authenticity and domestic affection, suggesting a beloved companion rather than a purely sporting subject. The panel remains in its original gilt frame, a restrained yet handsome moulding with beaded and fluted ornament that complements the painting’s period character. Together they form an evocative example of late-Victorian animal portraiture—an era that prized both craftsmanship and sentiment in equal measure. This portrait, attributed to Aistrop, stands as a classic expression of the English tradition of dog painting: observant, understated, and infused with a genuine love for the subject.
