About the Item
Richard Henry Brock (1871–1943) often known as "Dick" Brock, was born on July 21, 1871, in Colney Hatch, London. His family moved to Cambridge shortly after his birth, where his father worked as a reader for the Cambridge University Press. Richard attended St. Barnabas Church of England School and then the Higher Grade School for Boys in Cambridge. He later enrolled at the Cambridge School of Art, where he studied from 1888 and won numerous national prizes. By 1891, he was not only a student but also a pupil-teacher at the Cambridge Art School, continuing in this role until 1895 .
Brock began his career as an illustrator in 1897, contributing to publications such as The Infants’ Magazine and The Family Friend. However, he soon shifted his focus to painting, specializing in rural scenes, particularly farming, horses, and hunting. He exhibited his works at the Royal Academy of Arts in London between 1901 and 1913 . In addition to his exhibitions, Brock contributed illustrations to various periodicals, including The Tatler, Punch, The Boy’s Own Paper, and The Sheffield Weekly Telegraph .
In 1917, Brock married Mary Cooke, a schoolmistress. The couple resided in Madingley Road, Cambridge, where Richard continued his artistic endeavours until his death in 1943 .
"The End of the Fox Hunting Day"
This oil on canvas work captures a poignant moment in the countryside, embodying the tradition and atmosphere of a day's fox hunting.
The painting depicts a hunter attempting to open a gate at the conclusion of the day's hunt. The hunter, dressed in traditional hunting attire, is portrayed with a focused expression as he tries open the gate. The horse, a sturdy charger with a brown coat and white legs, stands attentively, its gaze reflects lack of trust on his master to open the gate. The painting conveys a sense of humour .
The setting sun casts a warm glow over the scene, highlighting the figures and their mounts. Brock's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the horses' coats, the hunter's attire, and the expressions of both humans and animals.
The warm hues of the sunset, combined with the subdued tones of the landscape, create an atmosphere of tranquillity. It reflects Brock's ability to capture not just the physical aspects of rural life but also the emotions and traditions associated with it.
"The End of the Fox Hunting Day" exemplifies Richard Henry Brock's skill in portraying the rural English countryside and the activities that defined it. His works offer a window into a bygone era, celebrating the harmony between humans, animals, and nature.
