About the Item

Chestnut mare ‘Nancy’ is signed lower left by American artist Richard Newton (1874-1951) and dated 1912. Newton is best known as an artist of horses and hunt scenes. His work has been well represented in galleries and the artist has been the subject of various publications about his work. ‘Nancy’ was painted when Newton was in his late thirties. Behind the mare there is a wooded autumn into winter landscape. She stands in a pasture with grass in shades of green tinged with orange, southern red clay soil and the edge of a pond. There is a distinctive single white foot and white on her forehead. Previously offered at auction with an estimate up to $2500 with premium, Newton’s work is well appreciated. Provenance from an art gallery in Bernardsville New Jersey, in a private collection from 1980s. Professionally cleaned and presented in a dark stained wood frame, ready to hang! In very good order, no issues noted.
