About the Item
This oil painting of mare and two foals is set in an idyllic landscape with mature old tree, stone well and cottage in the background; by Robert Alexander, signed and dated indistinctly, possibly 1937/9. Fine work, in the style of animal portraiture of an earlier Scottish/British style.
Scottish artist Robert Alexander (1840-1923) had a son, Robert, who would have studied but did not pursue painting full time. A second son did become a professional painter. It is possible this is by the younger son Robert, as it is a fine painting but of a later period than the father. The elder Robert Alexander was known for his paintings of animals, primarily horses and dogs.
The mare stands with one of her foals, and the second foal lies beside the stone well. It is a picturesque and tranquil pastoral scene.
Presented in wooden gilt frame, oil paint on an older board, the painting is in overall excellent condition.
The frame shows wear and one small missing piece, but this does little to detract from the overall presentation. About 20" high and 24" wide in the frame, this is a good size for most rooms.
