About the Item

Rod Sutterby (20th Century) Sun Dappled Trout Oil on canvas, signed lower left Circa 1996 Rod Sutterby’s Sun Dappled Trout is a striking underwater study that captures a school of trout gliding through a river, their sleek silver bodies illuminated by shafts of dappled sunlight filtering through the water’s surface. The artist renders the fish with a meticulous naturalism, emphasising the subtle iridescence of their scales and the fluidity of their movement, while the play of light and shadow across the green depths of the river conveys a sense of serenity and immersion. Painted circa 1996, the work reflects the enduring tradition of sporting and wildlife art, yet with a modern sensibility that places the viewer within the trout’s natural world. Sutterby’s brushwork is both precise and atmospheric, balancing careful observation with painterly handling of light, lending the composition a lively immediacy. Underwater scenes of this calibre are comparatively rare within the wider field of angling and sporting art, making this canvas a particularly desirable piece for collectors with an interest in both fine art and the sporting traditions of fishing. The painting not only records the natural beauty of trout in their habitat but also embodies the artist’s deep respect for the stillness and rhythm of the river. Housed in a complementary wooden frame, Sun Dappled Trout remains an evocative and highly decorative example of late 20th-century sporting art.

19th century English marine seascape, with fishing boats in the North Sea
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture, and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention in 1881 and a third-place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
