Samuel John Carter was born in March 1835 at Swaffham, Norfolk, the son of Samuel Isaac Carter, a gamekeeper. As a child Carter took lessons from John Sell Cotman who ran a school of drawing in Swaffham.
Basing himself in London and Swaffham, Carter became established as an animal painter, including wildlife and hunting scenes, and was the principal animal illustrator for the Illustrated London News from 1867 to 1889. He also worked as an animal portrait painter in his Norfolk locale, including obtaining commissions to paint clients' horses and dogs. Exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy, he drew positive comment from John Ruskin.
In 1858, at the age of 22, Carter married Martha Joyce (c. 1836–1920) at Swaffham. They had 11 children: ten sons and a daughter, with three sons dying in infancy. Most of the surviving children inherited their father's artistic talent with three, William, Verney and Amy, exhibiting at the Royal Academy. The youngest, Howard, became an archaeologist after gaining a reputation for his precise copying of Egyptian tomb decorations, later discovering the tomb of Tutankhamun.

English 18th century portrait of a water spaniel dog standing in a landscape
By George Stubbs
Located in Bath, Somerset
Circle of George Stubbs (1724-1806). English 18th century portrait of a water spaniel standing in a wooded landscape.
This charming painting is a wonderful example of the style of English dog painting made popular by artists such as George Stubbs and other sporting artists working in England in the 18th century who painted the dogs and horses of the aristocracy and wealthier classes. It follows in the ancient tradition of celebrating and commemorating our faithful canine companions through portraiture.

Portrait of a Spaniel - British Edwardian art dog portrait oil painting
By Robert Morley
Located in Hagley, England
This gorgeous British Edwardian dog portrait oil painting is by noted animal artist Robert Morley. Painted circa 1910 the composition is of a black and white spaniel, sitting down, against a white wall and door way. The dog has a black face and black patches with lovely roan type speckles up its legs and body. Morley has beautifully captured the wispy softness of its fur and fluffiness on its chest. Of course the dog has those mesmerising dark brown spaniel eyes that would melt any heart. This is a simply wonderful spaniel portrait...
