About the Item
A fine set of three fish portraits - A Kingfish (top), Salmon (middle), and Pompano (bottom) by American sporting artist Samuel Kilbourne (1836-1881). Kilbourne was born in Bridgetown (Bridgton), Maine, and began painting landscapes, until about 1858 when he took up the painting of fish. He was quite successful painting fish and was patronized both by sportsmen and scientists. At the time of his death he had just completed a series of illustrations for a book on Game Fish of the United States.
Each portrait is an oil on canvas, unsigned, and housed in a rustic simple wooden frame. The lower painting includes a small label identifying it as a Pompano. The top portrait (Kingfish) has a partial label on verso with title and artist name S.A. Kilbourne inscribed. The middle portrait has faint graphite date of 1872 inscribed on verso, and each is numbered on verso 19, 21, and 22 respectively.
