About the Item

'The Cavalier's Pets' by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer was exhibited in 1845, and is now in the collection of the Tate Museum of Art in London. This is a fine oil painting copy of the famous Landseer painting. This is a well executed work with all the hallmarks of a Victorian 19th century painting. In research, we have found that the original painting by Landseer was taken from an earlier 17th century Renaissance painting of the same two Spaniels. In this smaller painting on beveled board the dogs are on a red covered chair with barley twist legs. A folio of papers appear to have been pushed off the chair, and a green cloth is draped over the back of the chair. So, the original Landseer painting has a piece of an earlier painting, and here we have an copy of the ‘Cavalier’s Pets’ after 1845. Ever popular and endearing, this image has been preserved through the ages. Canvas sight is 16" by 24" in a two inch traditional frame. Rich color, in very good condition with wear such as light craquelure in areas that is consistent with age. Enjoy! Ready to hang! The original Landseer painting would likely be valued in tens of thousands, making this one purchased in the UK and imported, good value.

English 19th century portrait of two seated King Charles Cavalier Spaniels dogs
By James Cassie
Located in Woodbury, CT
James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician. This piece is framed in its original frame and the painting is signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse. From the inscription on the reverse, this painting was purchased from an important house sale...
