About the Item
Signed oil on canvas painting of steeplechase race star ‘Cloisters’, winner of the 1893 Grand National in Aintree, Mercyside, England with ab impressive 40 length lead. The horse is shining in the light, his shadow on the stable wall. On the lower frame are the words ‘Cloisters’ Winner of The Grand National 1892.
Indeed Cloisters ran in 1892 and was a “Winner” as runner-up, placing second. This was likely painted after that race, before Cloisters claimed first place so decisively the following year.
A red monogram appears lower left, possibly MC. Presented in an aged wooden frame with gesso and gilt, likely original or of the period.
Imported from the UK. A small tear was professionally restored, and the surface was lightly cleaned. Presented now in overall very good condition with very light craquelure in part the background.
