Painted by Suresh Sharma, this is a 20th Century miniature painting from one of the leading contemporary miniature painting Ateliers in Jaipur, owned by Mr V Bansal.
Mr Bansal's Father started the atelier in the mid 20th Century. He worked with leading artists from Jaipur including Ram Gopal Vijayvargiya and later Ramesh Sharma and Banwari Lal, all master painters. The techniques and materials were traditional. The younger artists in training would grind natural pigments in stone mortars with a pestle until the pigment was so fine that not even the smallest lump could ruin the fluid line of colour on paper. The harder stone pigments could take up to a week to grind. This natural pigment was then mixed with the gum from the Neem tree in shells called sips which came from the river and had a smooth inside. The paintbrushes were made with a single hair.
Jaipur is also home to a large community of paper makers in the district of Sanganer where the finest handmade papers were made, perfect for miniature painting. In the atelier, the master would sit at the front, crossed legged on a mat working from a desk. In front of him would be the other artists, working in the same position. This craft was normally passed from Father to son and new recruits came from family members of those artists already working at the atelier. As the students honed their skills they naturally gravitated to a particular area of painting. Some would specialise in trees and landscapes, other in animals, some in borders. However it was faces and elephants that were perceived to be the hardest skill to perfect and faces were often the last part of a painting to be completed. Paintings were often worked on by a range of artists to ensure that the best skills were used for every part of the work.
