About the Item

Charming King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and her Pups is an oil on old canvas painting in folk English School style. Dates to 18th century, the dogs are in a homestead by a thatched cottage with arched door and masonry stable/barn arch. The mother Spaniel has a pup on her shoulder looking straight out from the canvas to the viewer. Two pups are on the left side of their mother, and a fourth pup has its head in a basket on the right. From the arch behind the dogs the skies, fields and tree are seen. Inside the arched barn entry the dogs sit on the hay with ladder, steps and a basket near them. The painting is defined by the arched opening that frames the space with the dogs and also allows glimpses of the world behind them. The canvas is in good condition but has a woven cloth appearance showing its age, giving the appearance of a tapestry or weaving in the surface. There is a possible signature or letters lower right. The frame has patina and reddish coloring beneath the dark brown wood. From the back old nails are visible and the canvas is blackened. Previously in a private UK collection and imported to the US. This painting is in overall very good condition. Stable mild craquelure in the hay is visible on close inspection.
