About the Item

A finely executed late 19th-century still life by Walter Brackett (1823-1919) of a rainbow trout with rod and reel in the foreground, along with the fly that captured the trout. Fine example of a period fish still life popular in New England during this period. It is presented in a gilt frame with a linen inset and an inscribed painting label on the center front. Signed and dated, "W.M Brackett 1878" lower left. Provenance: The Estate of Ann Dickinson Dale Walter Bracket (1823-1919) was born in Unity, Maine, and spent most of his artistic career in Boston, where he established a studio. He is known for the fish and game still lifes that were popular in the late 19th Century.
