About the Item

William Lucas Lucas (British, early 20th century) 'Southdale Jock', thought to be a field or English springer spaniel signed and dated 'W LLucas 1926' (lower right) and inscribed "Southdale Jock." (lower left) oil on canvasboard 12 x 13 ⅞ in. (30.5 x 35.2 cm.) frame 13 ½ x 15 ½ in. (34.3 x 39.4 cm.) Southdale Jock, owner H.S. Welch, Esq., Smethwick, Staffs, later J.P., O.BE., H.S.W. This finely observed portrait by William Lucas Lucas depicts Southdale Jock, a sturdy black-and-white spaniel standing alertly against a neutral background. Painted in 1926, the composition reflects Lucas’s skill in capturing the form and temperament of working dogs with precision and affection. The subject’s attentive pose and subtly modelled coat convey both character and breed traits, suggesting a Field or English Springer Spaniel lineage. Lucas was known for his portraits of champion and sporting dogs, often commissioned by their owners. This example exemplifies his crisp, direct style and enduring appeal among collectors of canine portraiture.

Portrait of a Spaniel - British Edwardian art dog portrait oil painting
By Robert Morley
Located in Hagley, England
This gorgeous British Edwardian dog portrait oil painting is by noted animal artist Robert Morley. Painted circa 1910 the composition is of a black and white spaniel, sitting down, against a white wall and door way. The dog has a black face and black patches with lovely roan type speckles up its legs and body. Morley has beautifully captured the wispy softness of its fur and fluffiness on its chest. Of course the dog has those mesmerising dark brown spaniel eyes that would melt any heart. This is a simply wonderful spaniel portrait...
