About the Item
"Monoculture" is an oil painting by Contemporary American artist, Anthony Mastromatteo; poking fun at the infamous banana duct taped to the wall, aka "Comedian" by Maurizio Cattelan, which caused the entire world to collectively gast when it sold for $6.2 million at Sothebys Auction in 2024.
Mastromatteo uses his incredible ability to meticulously paint objects so hyper-real, a viewer wouldn't believe its a 2-dimensional painting. An audacious move, to recreate an artwork whos rights belong to a billionare, not only once, but three times. However, Rene Magritte has taught us art-viewers that a painting of an object cannot be classified as that object, with his 1929 painting "The Treachery of Images" a painting of a smoking pop inscribed "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" or "this is not a pipe".
Monoculture is a statement on individuality, absurdity, and widespread acceptance. This painting is humorous, though provoking and certainly a conversation starter.

The arts have been an integral part of Anthony Mastromatteo’s life for over 25 years. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Princeton University in 1992 led to a five year position at Christie’s auction house in New York City in the American Paintings, 19th Century Paintings and Maritime Paintings and Objects departments. As his exposure to the art world expanded he began studying the practice of art after work at the Art Student’s League in New York City. In 1997 he made the transition to full-time art study at the Water Street Atelier, a school of art practice based on the methodology of the French Academy and the French atelier system of the 18th and 19th centuries, under the tutelage of Jacob Collins. In 2002 he finished his studies and made the transition to working as a professional artist. He has worked solely as an artist since that time. He currently has representation with galleries in New York City, Los Angeles and Cleveland.

Felix Culpa, or Must be a Woe - trompe l
oeil oil painting
By Anthony Mastromatteo
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Continuing his affinity for Malevich’s geometric paragon is Felix Culpa or ‘Must be a Woe,” this time, in red. Three red squares hover above Christ suffering on the cross—one of the most recognizable images in art history—yet here, no wooden cross is in sight. Christ simply floats against a white wall. The three “Red Squares” map the edges of the invisible crucifix, and an old violin...

About the Artist: David Hockney is one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. Perhaps best known for his serial paintings of swimming pools, portraits of friends, and verdant landscapes, the artist’s oeuvre ranges from collaged photography and opera posters to Cubist-inspired abstractions and plein-air paintings of the English countryside. Often returning to a certain motif again and again, he probes the manifold ways one can see an image or a space. Hockney’s exploration of photography’s effect on painting and everyday life is evinced in his hallmark work A Bigger Splash (1967). “In art, new ways of seeing mean new ways of feeling; you can't divorce the two, as, we are now aware, you cannot have time without space and space without time,” he has explained. Born on July 9, 1937 in Bradford, United Kingdom, Hockney attended the Royal College of Art in London alongside R.B. Kitaj. At school, he studied under both Francis Bacon and Peter Blake, but also credits Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse for influencing his distinctive and varied style. In 1963, the artist traveled to Southern California for the first time and fell in love with the bright sunshine and easygoing lifestyle. Since then, he has alternated living and working between Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and Los Angeles, CA. In November 2018, his 1972 painting...
