About the Item
A Sunflower Splash - The bright yellow sunflowers cuddle
the dark red chrysanthemum in an embrace as they stand tall in the clear
vase, The open faces of the sunny sunflowers are in contrast to the shy,
introverted mum ("Mums the word.") whose petals curl inward.
Painting wet into wet, brushes loaded with paint, fine artist Carole
Garland exuberantly tackles her subject,
a vase of flowers. She seems to revel in the flailing motion of the
sunflower petals while quietly revealing the petals of the beautiful,
gentle chrysanthemum. This painting technique is known as "alla prima," an
Italian term meaning to paint in a single sitting or at first attempt. In
French it is called "au premier coup" , or direct painting.
The 20"x16" oil painting on a wood panel is wired for ease of hanging and
handling. The natural wood sides of the panel can serve as a frame.
Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill.; and studied
art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas in
Mexico City. She took classes and workshops with many fine artists,
from Frank Serrano to Jove Wang and Jeff Horn and most recently has been
influenced by artist David Gallup
who has grounded her in traditional academic painting while encouraging
experimentation and exploration.
Garland has shown in numerous venues in Southern California including
galleries and museums and is in art collections throughout the United
States.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.
