Stiffkey, the coastal village in North Norfolk famous for its rich-coloured clay-rich mud is the inspiration for this work. Layers of rich reds, stone tones, pinks, blues and terracottas give the impression of earth and silt surrounded by ethereal light and foaming sea. A semi-abstract seascape by East Anglian-based artist Claire Oxley, it is an abstract painting using mixed media eco chalk-based paint on canvas, varnished and framed. Claire is a synaesthete, which means that she experiences movement, sound and experience through a range of alternative senses, mostly colour. This is a composition of rhythm, sound and feeling as much as a visual representation of the scene. This is a work of fracturing light and dancing energy, with exciting but balanced colours throughout.

Artist biography:
Claire Oxley’s work is distinctive through its colour intensity and rhythmic mark-making. Taking inspiration from surrounding landscapes, her starting point is often the passing seasons and wide, changing moods of her East Anglian home. ‘I make paintings that chart and describe the seasons, skies, seas, moons, fields, flowers, and foliage of the area: canvases of energy and flux. These works are felt and heard as much as seen, stirring memories and experiences from these vast counties. Unexpected colour combinations stimulate and bring energy to interior spaces.’ She is, above everything, a composer of colour.
Claire regularly exhibits in Norfolk and Suffolk, London, and across the UK. Her work is held in private collections worldwide.

Claire Oxley
Claire Oxley's abstract landscapes, inspired by the Norfolk countryside in England, are uplifting and soulful paintings brightening walls and homes with their vibrancy of colour and flowing movement. Claire’s path to a career artist began through her studies of Art and Music at Lancaster, and Musicology at Oxford. She has always been fascinated by the interplay between music and art. Not only as she enjoys them both, but also as she has synesthesia, a condition where the brain links a person’s senses together in a rare manner, prompting unusual sensory responses to stimuli. For example, one might see a certain colour in response to a certain letter of the alphabet. For Claire, one can see this sensory mêlée in her art with great effect as her brushstrokes are visual representations of music, as can be found on a music sheet.
