The painting is unsigned
A moving devotional painting from the late Baroque period, depicting Christ in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Kneeling before a vision of the chalice and angel, He is bathed in an otherworldly light that breaks through the surrounding darkness. The artist’s handling of light and shadow reveals a deep understanding of the Italian chiaroscuro tradition, while the soft radiance on the figure’s red and silver-grey drapery evokes the influence of Guercino and Carlo Maratta.
The scene’s restrained emotion, warm palette, and theatrical illumination are characteristic of Italian religious painting of the late 17th century, blending spirituality with painterly grace. The luminous sky and subtle modelling suggest a Roman or Venetian hand—an artist working within the orbit of the great devotional masters who sought to express divine revelation through human tenderness.
