About the Item
The painting is a delicate Chinese export artwork rendered on rice paper, showcasing the refined detail and stylistic elegance characteristic of 18th to 19th-century export art made for Western markets.
At the centre of the composition sits a poised lady, possibly a courtesan, her figure composed and serene. She wears an elaborate costume rich in colour and intricate in pattern—layers of silk robes in deep blues, crimson reds, and soft golds, each adorned with embroidered motifs of phoenixes, peonies, or dragons, symbolic of beauty, grace, and status. Her hair is styled in a high coiffure, decorated with ornamental hairpins and jade pieces.
She is seated on a carved wooden chair—dark, lacquered, and finely detailed—suggesting wealth and refinement. Her posture is upright, hands delicately placed.
Beneath her, the floor is covered with a richly decorated carpet. Its design is bold yet harmonious, featuring a symmetrical pattern of medallions and floral motifs in jewel-like tones, lending a strong visual foundation to the otherwise airy composition.
Behind the lady stands a modest wooden table with a graceful silhouette. Atop it rests a ceramic or cloisonné jar, finely painted with floral designs, holding a small bouquet—lotus, chrysanthemums, or plum blossoms—carefully arranged to echo themes of refinement and transience.
The backdrop is a stark, pure white wall. It offers no architectural detailing or ornamentation, creating a striking contrast that isolates the central figure, emphasizing her elegance and the artistry of her costume and surroundings. The white space also enhances the luminosity of the rice paper medium, allowing the vibrant colours and fine brushwork to stand out with clarity and delicacy.
Overall, the painting exudes a sense of quiet luxury, cultural symbolism, and aesthetic restraint—typical of Chinese export paintings meant to depict an idealized view of Chinese femininity and interior decor to Western collectors.

19th Century Chinese school
Paintings from the China Trade Beginning in the late 1700s, an increasing number of international merchant vessels began bringing back to their respective ports cargos of exotic objects from China which found ready markets in America and Europe. An insatiable interest in Asian things resulted in a range of exquisite objects created by Chinese artisans specifically for the western markets. Among the items that filled the holds of the sailing ships were furniture, silk embroideries, lacquerware, ivory carvings, fans, and a fascinating variety of paintings. These paintings offered first hand documentation of the ships that plied the Far East Trade and the exotic ports they visited. These early ‘China Trade’ paintings are considered to be some of the finest harbor views and ship portraits ever produced. They usually have no signatures or labels and offer little or no indication of who the artist was. Only a score or so names from the period are even known and these may be positively identified with only a very few paintings.
