Dorit Levi, Israeli (Born 1952). 'Golden Sounds' Oil on canvas (possible acrylic on canvas or mixed media) Hand signed bottom right and on verso. Measures 20"H x 24"W, framed 33" H x 37" W. Dorit Levi was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1952, her Yemenite upbringing and culture playing an important role in her art. Her talent enabled her to study at the prestigious Wizo France Art School in her native city, where she had the great fortune to learn from one of Israel's greatest artists, Edwin Salomon. The artist's personal experiences in Uganda, Africa where she lived for several years, are reflected in many of her paintings. The vast savannas translate into the warm colors of backdrops, and the flow and movement of her vibrant figures are inspired by Uganda's colorful markets and the people in embroidered garb. Dorit's works are remarkable in her use of gold leaf and the enormous attention to detail and complex composition. Each time one looks at a Dorit Levi painting new aspects and new configurations are discovered. More than anything, the collectors of her contemporary artworks remark on the feeling of joy, optimism and peace they inspire. The influences of Bolivian artist Rodo Boulanger, as well as cubist Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, and the cubism of Georges Braque are a background for the distinct signature of Levi's lyrical style, forged of her strong artistic vision and of a wealth of personal experiences. He grew up among villagers with modest lives and the village culture. The Rangolis at the village festival and the local potters’ fine works of art inspired him greatly towards art as a hobby and potential career from early childhood. His father was then posted to Kolkata so their family relocated to the city. Once the capital of India, with its rich cultural heritage and character immediately caught my attention. He started painting for the first time in the city. Since the central theme to his paintings is related to present day society, his works appear photographic or naturalistic. The religious ghats of Varanasi, Haridwar and other antique places attracted him for their cultural heritage characterised by the holy saints, antique architectures, old idol sculptures and mysticism, spirituality. So he portrayed the simplicity of the architectural doors, temples, sculptures and the beautiful narrow streets and ‘galis’ which holds beauty that can not be described in words. He always prefers a highly realistic approach in his paintings for whatever he sees in his surroundings. He started to represent paintings in a form whose expression manifests a step ahead of photography. He has always tried to reach to a horizon where photography cannot reach and make a statement what is called hyperrealism.
