Crucifixion, cercle of Adriaen Isenbrandt, mid 16th century
School of Bruges, cercle of Adriaen Isenbrandt (actif 1510-1551)
Oil on oak panel with its original ebonized frame
Dimensions : 53,50 cm x 40 cm
Our panel, originally the central part of a triptych, illustrates one of the subjects that has become universal in Western art, the crucifixion scene.
The crucifixion of Jesus, recounted in all the gospels, is one of the episodes of the Passion of Christ. The contemplation of his death by the faithful is and has always been an intense devotional exercise. The suffering of Christ had to be made as realistic as possible by the artist, in order to move the spectators and give rise to piety.
Christ with his emaciated body is suspended from his cross. He is girded at the loins by a short perizonium with a slightly transparent appearance. The arms are almost horizontal and the fingers close over the nails which pierce the palms of his hands. In an attitude of resignation and abandonment his head crowned with thorns is leaning on his right shoulder, but his eyes remain open while his wounds shed a few drops of blood and show how painful the torture he is enduring is.
At the foot of the cross on his right, the Virgin stands upright buried in an immense dark blue cloak, from which only her face and hands stand out. Her hands with interlaced fingers joined in front of her, her face inclined, her eyes lowered, she no longer has the strength to look at the suffering of her son.
At the foot of the cross, Mary Magdalene kneels, her eyes lowered, embraces the bottom of the cross, in an attitude full of tenderness and adoration she rests her cheek against the foot of Christ.
Saint John the Baptist on her left, his eyes raised towards Jesus, raises his hands with open palms and fingers extended in a sign of prayer.
Thick grey clouds obscure the sky, which contrasts with a rocky and wild landscape with earthy tones, while Jerusalem nestled in the hills stands out in all its splendour, the many buildings with conical roofs and domes, among which we recognise the Temple of Jerusalem on the right and the complex of the Holy Sepulchre on the left.
Our work, marked by a Gothic influence typical of the Bruges school, is close to the works of Adriaen Isenbrandt. Several paintings that are attributed to his workshop display the same composition bringing together the three figures around the cross, but differ in the format, landscape and perspective.
The reduced format and the shape of our painting allow us to deduce its origin as a small portable triptych or for private devotion. The wings (disappeared) were probably intended to represent the donors (the sponsors of the painting) as can be seen on the triptych kept in a private collection (listed in the RKD database in Amsterdam)

At first glance, this festive and joyful painting depicts a group of elegantly dressed people dancing to the sound of an orchestra in a richly decorated interior with a wide opening onto a rural exterior. However, the real theme is cleverly concealed by the painter and is only discernible through the artifice of a small scene in the background where we see a half-naked man, in the company of the pigs next to a makeshift shelter.
In fact, beyond the pleasant and apparently superficial character of the painting, it is a subject taken from the parable of the prodigal son in the Gospel. The illustrated episode is the prodigal son among courtesans.
Even if the viewer's attention is drawn to the central couple (prodigal son embracing a pretty courtesan) doing the dance steps, the artist takes care in a narrative approach of all the groups and ancillary scenes in order to create a rich and varied composition. Thus the musicians seated on a raised platform are depicted with great skill, their faces animated, their clothes abundantly varied.
The theme of music, which has always been associated with that of sensuality and physical love, helps to exacerbate licentious pleasures.
The merry company dances "Spanish pavane", a slow court dance from the sixteenth century, danced close to the ground by couples arranged in a procession, which was probably introduced to the south of the Netherlands around 1600 during the governance of Albrecht VII and the daughter of the King of Spain Isabella Clara Eugenia in Brussels.
The interior of the house is also carefully elaborated, the embossed leather dyes on the walls, the middle sideboard (typical in Francken interiors), where the rich gold and silver crockery is placed in front of the painting "Andromeda chained to the rock and Perseus arriving to rescue her". The inclusion of a contemporary and probably extant pictorial work is also one of the characteristics of the Francken family, among them Frans Francken the Younger...

Notes:

The printer/publisher David Funck's (plate) number "182" lower right. This etching is after Albrecht Dürer’s 1511 engraving "The Crucifixion (Christ on the Cross)", ("Dürer-Katalog" - Meder No. 13, page 73). Printed in black from an iron plate. The image depicts Christ on the cross at center, the Virgin at left, two Maries behind her, St. John standing at right, a Roman solider behind him. It is after the eleventh plate of Dürer's sixteen plates from his 1507-1513 "The Engraved Passion" series, ("Dürer-Katalog" - Meder No. 3-18, page 70-74).
"The print was originally designed without the number engraved in the lower margin (First state: Lambrecht Hopfer, c. 1530). The Hopfers' descendant David Funck (Nuremberg, 1642–1705) acquired over two hundred of their original iron plates, engraved numbers into them, and re-printed them around 1686-1700. The "182" indicates that "The Crucifixion" was the 182nd print in Funck’s series (Second state: David Funck, c. 1686-1700). About a century later, 92 of these plates were acquired by Carl Wilhelm Silberberg in Frankfurt and printed for the third and final time in the book "Opera Hopferiana", of which "The Crucifixion" was the 90th print (Third state: Carl Wilhelm Silberberg for "Opera Hopferiana", 1802)". - Elizabeth Upper, Cambridge University Library, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK
