This edition print and supplied by Kunstverlagspartner, since then is professionally stored and protected and controlled graphic archive from light and humidity.
It was then directly acquired by GSY and since in our GSY Gallery House Collection.
About the painting:
Portrait of Armand Roulin (1889) by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh.
in the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany.
The subject of the portrait is the 17-year-old Armand Joseph Desire Roulin (1871 – 1945), oldest son of the post-master Joseph Roulin in the town of Arles in southern France.
In the summer of 1888, van Gogh became friends with his neighbour in Arles. With great affection, the artist painted a number of portraits of Joseph Roulin and his family.
Armand Roulin modelled for two portraits similar in format and execution; it shows a young man dressed in a yellow jacket, full faced against a background of Veronese green. Van Gogh probably painted this carefully composed study shortly after the first version in December 1888. Apparently the subject and his family preferred this portrait.
Van Gogh wrote of his desire for the portrayal of the infinite in his portraits and Armand’s eyes looking deep into the viewer, evoke a sense of understanding and kinder spirit through Van Gogh's brushstrokes.
van Gogh resided in Arles from 1888 to 1889. Van Gogh developed a close friendship with the Roulin family. Armand Roulin’s involvement in van Gogh’s life became more significant following the artist’s tragic death in 1890.
Armand, along with his father and other family members, played a crucial role in supporting and promoting van Gogh’s artistic legacy. They actively sought out and collected van Gogh’s artworks, preserving them and ensuring their recognition and preservation.
