About the Item
“Blessing” is a luminous Nihonga painting by Akira Ooya that captures the quiet magic often found in his dream-filled world. A young girl stands on a rock beneath a sky filled with drifting stars. Soft tones of blue, rose, and milky white blend gently, creating a glow similar to winter auroras or a summer night’s Milky Way. The atmosphere feels peaceful and protective, as if the falling starlight itself were offering a gentle blessing.
Ooya creates this dreamlike effect through delicate layers of mineral pigments that give the scene a soft, misty luminosity. The surrounding landscape is rendered with the sensitivity of traditional Nihonga materials, producing a calm and slightly mystical mood. The work feels like a moment from a personal fairy tale and invites the viewer into a world of imagination, comfort, and emotional warmth.
Ooya is known for turning universal inner dreamscapes into visual poetry. His inspirations include childhood stories, fairy tales by Grimm and Andersen, and mythological scenes. He interprets these subjects with a contemporary sensibility while remaining faithful to classical Japanese painting techniques.
Ooya began studying art at age six and later graduated from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. He was first selected for the prestigious Inten Exhibition in 1998 and has participated every year since. He has also shown annually at the Spring Inten Exhibition since 2001. His exhibitions include major venues such as Matsuzakaya Nagoya, Mitsukoshi Nihombashi, Ginza, and other leading galleries.
From 2010 to 2014, he took part in the important reproduction project of the “Life of Prince Shōtoku” paintings for Anjo City. Known for his lyrical dream scenes and fairy-tale narratives created with mineral pigments on silk, Ooya continues to shape a distinctive voice in contemporary Nihonga. He is an Associate Member of the Japan Art Institute and teaches Nihonga at Art Club Quartier Latin.
