Mattais Cartier (French, circa 1910–1960) Cubist Figure with Raised Arm, 1947 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right Executed in 1947, this bold and architectonic composition by Mattais Cartier exemplifies the enduring vitality of French postwar Cubism. A striking female figure, reduced to angular planes of vivid colour, raises her arm in a gesture at once lyrical and geometric. Cartier’s mastery of shape and balance is evident in the way each chromatic block interlocks—greens, oranges, and ochres arranged with rhythmic precision against a warm terracotta ground. Cartier belonged to the generation of French painters who carried the Cubist legacy beyond its analytical origins into a more decorative and expressive idiom. By the late 1940s, artists such as Léger, Herbin, and Bloc had already established the visual language of colour as structure; Cartier’s work shares this spirit while retaining a distinctly human narrative. His figures are not fragmented abstractions but bold syntheses—embodiments of strength, sensuality, and modern life. The present work displays an assured command of both design and pigment. The matte surface, sculptural contours, and deliberate simplification of form recall the aesthetic of the École de Paris, while the palette—restrained yet luminous—reveals Cartier’s sensitivity to harmony and emotional tone. Signed and dated 1947 at the lower right, the painting remains in exceptional condition and is presented in a modern ebonised and gilt-edged frame that complements its geometric clarity.
