About the Item

A captivating oil painting by the Haitian master, Albert Desmangles. This piece is a wonderful example of his work within the highly sought-after School of Beauty art movement, which is defined by its reverence for female elegance and a focus on harmonious, luminous compositions. Desmangles' signature style is instantly recognisable here, depicting the "Universal Woman" with a masterful blend of delicate figuration and bold abstracted elements. The subject's form is suggested through planes and shapes, lending a subtle cubist sensibility that adds depth and intellectual weight to the portrait. Note the striking silhouette profile in the background, contrasting with the forward-facing gaze, a compositional device that creates an intriguing sense of duality and mystery. The muted, yet deeply evocative, colour palette features rich earth tones and dramatic accents of cool teal and gold, with a striking orb balanced near the figure's head, suggesting a surreal or symbolic narrative. Albert Desmangles was born in Port-au-Prince in 1957. Though largely self-taught, his artistic path was guided by influential figures like his brother, Henry Bastien, and later by master artists such as Bernard Sejourne and Jean-Rene Jerome. Desmangles is celebrated as one of the last living masters of the L'École de Beauté or School of Beauty, an important movement in Haitian art. Since 1980, his works have been featured in numerous exhibitions globally, including in Haiti, the United States, Europe, and Japan, making his paintings highly valued by international collectors of contemporary Caribbean art. Our oil on masonite measures 35 x 28 cm and is signed at the lower right. The overall framed size in a patinated wooden frame is 46 x 39 cm
