About the Item
Albert Roosenboom was a Belgian genre painter celebrated for his elegant depictions of everyday life in the mid to late 19th century. A pupil of the renowned Constantin Meunier, Roosenboom diverged from his master’s focus on industrial realism to embrace refined domestic and leisure subjects, particularly scenes featuring children. His works are noted for their delicate brushwork, harmonious colour palettes, and keen observation of social customs and dress. Exhibiting from 1869 onwards in Brussels, Ghent, and London, Roosenboom’s paintings found a devoted audience during his lifetime and continue to be sought after today, with his biography recorded in major reference works including Bénézit.
Enfants à la plage (“Children at the Beach”) is a quintessential example of Roosenboom’s charm and skill. Set against a softly clouded seaside sky, the composition depicts three children engaged in a leisurely game of croquet on the sand. The detail is exquisite: the pink dress with sailor collar, the boy’s red cap, the straw hats, and the tiny tricolour flag planted in a sandcastle all speak to the refined leisure culture of the period. The scene captures both the innocence and the gentle formality of childhood in the mid-19th century, rendered with the warm light and fine textures characteristic of the artist’s best work.
