About the Item

Mid Century Parisian Cityscape, street view, by noted Spanish artist Alejo Vidal-Quadras. The painting is signed and dated bottom right and is presented in a period wood frame. An original exhibition label with the title is front, bottom centre. There are also various other exhibition labels to the rear panel including one for the Mirador Galerie d'Art, 17 Place Vendome Paris. A really spectacular street view of a typical Parisian building, apartments and shops, with all its various residents. Full of colour and character capturing everyday Parisian life in the 1940's but full of wit and charm. The painting is full of the artist's observations, each time one takes a look another charming detail is revealed, the shop sign, the dog, the washing...... Vidal-Quadras painted this work upon his return to Paris from South America in 1947 and it may have been part of his highly successful exhibition in 1949 which launched his European career and led to such international reknown. It was also apparently shown in 1953 at a Spanish American exhibition. This is an important painting in the oeuvre of the artist. Alejo Vidal-Quadras Veiga was born on April 12, 1919, in the upper bourgeoisie of Barcelona, Spain. Alejo and his elder brother Francisco Javier Vidal-Quadras Veiga receive a highly disciplined education. In 1924 their parents Javier Vidal-Quadras y Villavecchia and Pilar Veiga de la Cuesta, move with them to France. Alejo is eleven years old when they return to Spain. At school, Alejo is recognized for his artistic talents. During his classes he draws caricatures of his teachers. On his mother’s advice he joins the painting classes of José Maria Vidal-Quadras, his uncle and a portraitist of great Catalan families. Alejo is an immediate stand out, his spectacular progress marks him as a true artist. Felipe Bertran Güell, a relative of the Vidal-Quadras, commissions from the young man a series of pen and ink portraits to illustrate a book on contemporary history. Fernando Rivière, a successful industrialist and Alejo’s uncle, commissions portraits of his family in charcoal and oil. Alejo is later asked to do portraits of the children, nephews, close relatives and friends of the Güell family. This gives the 22-year-old artist the opportunity to organize his first exhibition at a gallery in Barcelona. With the outbreak of World War II and a frail economy, Alejo with his mother and brother depart Europe for Argentina. They arrive in Buenos Aires, a true harbour of peace and abundance. Thereafter they travel to Santiago Chile where they decide to extend their stay for two years. Alejo paints portraits, becomes well known and in November of 1943 exposes at the National Salon at the Alhambra Palace. In 1944, back in Argentina, the young painter establishes a reputation and receives many commissions. He keeps company with many artists and meets his future wife, Tilda Thamar, an Argentinian movie star. These are happy times, filled with optimism. Other commissions continue to roll in and Alejo begins describing himself as a portraitist. Returning to Europe after the war, in 1947, Alejo chooses to live in Paris in order to refine his talent. He travels across Europe by car, visits its museums and monuments, gathering inspiration from the great masters he admires. One year later, Tilda Thamar joins him in Paris. In 1949, he holds his first exhibition in Paris; critically well received, it features a variety of works – portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and cities. It’s a productive period, pushed by his wife’s inspiration and an intense social life in post war Paris. In 1956 Alejo’s reputation blossoms when the Countess of Paris commissions twelve portraits – one of herself and one of each of her eleven children. Marie-Charlotte Pedrazzini, journalist at Paris-Match Magazine, writes an article about this commission thus boosting Alejo’s international career. They would get married 21 years later. In his Montmartre studio, Alejo welcomes many royals, including Italy’s King Umberto and his daughters; Wallis, Duchess of Windsor; Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco; as well as notables from the world of entertainment like Anouk Aimée, Audrey Hepburn, Sir Arthur Rubinstein, Maria Callas, Marilyn Monroe, Yul Brynner, and other personalities, including industrialist Gianni Agnelli, socialite Gloria Guinness, steel baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis’ family. Commissions come in from all quarters – the imperial court of Iran and the royal families of Spain, Italy, Greece, Austria, Jordan and Yugoslavia, as well as the Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg and the Princely Family of Monaco. In Brazil, Alejo paints four generations of a same family. In Argentina he paints several portraits of Amalia Lacroze and Alfredo Fortabat and their family – in exhibition at the Colección de Arte Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat. Alejo Vidal-Quadras adopts a new, more streamlined, clean, and intimate style. He captures his models’ soul and personality. From 1960 onward, prestigious art galleries such as Wally Findlay Galleries (New York, Paris and Palm Beach) and Frank Partridge in London, exhibit his work annually.
