About the Item

Modernist oil on canvas of a woman with mandolin signed Rogoway bottom centre left and presented in period mid century frame. A lovely rendering of a lady seated playing a stringed instrument. The image is made up of numerous strong colour fields and clean lines which give it great impact. There is definitely inspiration here from Picasso's modernist abstract works (the flat planes, strong colours and exaggerated form). There are also abstract geometric elements imparting great strength and structure to the painting. Alfred Rogoway. (1899-1990) Using scenes from his own inner consciousness, Alfred Rogoway created a world of sensitively distorted figures. His beings are fairy tale creatures and from myths that partake of all the activities of man in a mood which might be termed eternal. A true somnambulist who dreams in paint, finding expression for all the subtleties of his nature on canvasses. He prays, dances, loves and plays in rich vibrant colours and delicate, delineated drawing. "Rogoway always wished to create something truly beautiful so that the world would have gained through his expressions of life." (quoted from the essay by Kaya Morgan.) Today, his presence still lives on in permanent collections at the Grosvenor Gallery in London, the Copenhagen National Museum, the American Gallery in Los Angeles, the Universities of Illinois, Arizona, New Mexico and in private collections throughout the world — a testament to his own unique creative expression. As his dear friend, colleague and playwright, Henry Miller, once said of him, "He paints as other men must dream, and his visions take him back thousands of years of world subconsciousness. He belongs to no one medium but to all. His is the gentleness of the large man who cannot touch something small for fear of crushing it, yet all subtleties of his nature find expression on canvas." Although many different styles are encompassed by the term, there are certain underlying principles that define modernist art: A rejection of history and conservative values (such as realistic depiction of subjects); innovation and experimentation with form (the shapes, colours and lines that make up the work) with a tendency to abstraction; and an emphasis on materials, techniques and processes. Modernism has also been driven by various social and political agendas. These were often utopian, and modernism was in general associated with ideal visions of human life and society and a belief in progress.
