Born in Algeria, Alphonse Léon Germain-Thill was a painter of landscapes and oriental scenes. He first studied at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers before going to Paris where he studied with Fernand Cormon and Gustave Moreau.
From his childhood in Aumale, Germain-Thill had the opportunity to observe the customs in Algeria and depicted for example spinners and dancers. He also painted religious and mythological works that he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1901 and from 1908 at the Salon des Artistes Algériens et Orientalistes. He also made engravings for book illustrations.
Germain-Thill was in Algeria from 1906, where he spent the rest of his life. A retrospective of his work was held at the Algiers Winter Salon in 1926. One of his paintings, The Austerlitz Bridge, is held in the Algiers Museum.
