About the Item

AMERICA MARTIN "Joe Louis no.2" Ink on Paper 14" x 11" A portion of each sale will be donated to the ACLU + NAACP JoAnne Artman Gallery proudly introduces America Martin’s new series "I See Heroes Everywhere." Addressing the theme of heroism, Martin focuses on epic themes such as courage, sacrifice, and the ways that changing political and philosophical systems affected the choices and legacies of her subjects. Employing smooth, bold curves as well as hard, geometric strokes, she adheres to the most fundamental aspect of drawing - the line - to tell the stories of these heroes. 'I am creating a series of ink on paper line works. Simple drawings of our heroes. Starting with the ones we know. The thinkers, the dreamers, we personally relate to, who have by their passion and action shaped us. Helped us grow into better versions of ourselves. " Focused on the human figure and the tales that emerge through the framework of shape, contour, and formal approach, Martin’s technique of freehandedly capturing her subjects yields unapologetic marks that hum with vitality and dimensionality. Both exuberant and refined, her experimentation with line weight takes on a new balance between solidity and weight, breathing life into each portrait. Pairing a quote with each likeness, Martin invites visitors to consider the core values of leadership—justice, integrity, generosity and empathy—embodied in her art. "Heroes villains have many of the same qualities they have flaws, and weaknesses, but the one difference, that is literally magic, is that the hero is capable of change. The hero is capable of having a perspective shift and then doing something about it." Through the stories they tell by means of history and Martin’s depictions, this assembled group of leaders challenge us to be our very best selves.

"Joe Louis" Oil on Board with Mixed Media, Iconic Portrait, African American
By Henry Heading
Located in Detroit, MI
“Joe Louis” is a breathtakingly beautiful portrait of a man who was the best in his profession yet humble in his demeanor. Louis was an American professional boxer who competed from 1934 to 1951. Nicknamed the Brown Bomber, Louis is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 until his temporary retirement in 1949. He was victorious in 25 consecutive title defenses, a record for all weight classes. Louis had the longest single reign as champion of any boxer in history. He is widely regarded as the first person of African-American descent to achieve the status of a nationwide hero within the United States, and was also a focal point of anti-Nazi sentiment leading up to and during World War II because of his historic rematch with German Boxer Max Schmeling in 1938. He was instrumental in integrating the game of golf, breaking the sport's color barrier in America by appearing under a sponsor's exemption in a PGA event in 1952. The artist, Henry Heading...

Untitled (Joe Louis knocking out Max Schmeling in 1938 rematch)
By Fletcher Martin
Located in Fairlawn, OH
Untitled (Joe Louis knocking out Max Schmeling in 1938 rematch) Pen and ink with wash on heavy wove sketchbook paper, 1938 Signed lower right: Fletcher Martin Directly related to Martin's famous painting of 1942 entitled "Lullaby", which was also used in the lithograph of the same name. (see photo) The drawing depicts the third and final knockdown of Max Schmeling in their rematch of 1938. Condition: Mat staining at the edges of the sketchbook page edges Toning to verso from previous framing. Does not affect framed presentation "It was here that Louis first used sport to bridge America's cavernous racial divide. With Hitler on the march in Europe and using Schmeling's victory over Louis as proof of “Aryan supremacy,” anti-Nazi sentiment ran high in the States. Louis had long grown accustomed to the pressures of representing his race but here the burdens were broader and deeper. Now he was shouldering the hopes of an entire nation. A few weeks before the match Louis visited the White House and U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whose tenure lasted even longer than Louis' would, told him, “Joe, we need muscles like yours to beat Germany.” Those muscles certainly beat Schmeling on fight night...
