French artist André Brasilier was born in 1929 in Saumur, a town in western Franc. Brasilier attended the Ecole des Beaux-Art in Paris. In 1952, he was awarded the Florence Blumenthal Award, and the following year, he received the Prix de Rome for his painting. He lived at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1954 until 1957 and currently resides and works in Paris.
By merging abstraction with expressionism, André Brasilier's lyrical, dreamlike artworks delve into a deep connection with the natural world. Horses—described by Brasilier as "a remarkable creation. . . imbued with symbolism, strength, energy, and beauty"—play a significant role in his work, their graceful figures galloping across tranquil coastal views, frosty winter forests, and vibrant sunsets. His wife and muse, Chantal, is also prominently featured, often depicted as she tenderly arranges blooms.
In 1980, Brasilier held his inaugural retrospective featuring one hundred pieces spanning from 1950 to 1980 at the Château de Chenonceau, followed by a retrospective at the Musée Picasso-Château Grimaldi in Antibes on the French Riviera in 1988. Since then, he has been celebrated with significant retrospectives at Russia's prestigious State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg in 2005, and at the Museum Haus Ludwig für Kunstausstellungen Saarlois in Germany in 2007.

André Brasilier
Born to two accomplished artists, Brasilier was naturally drawn to painting, and at the age of 20, he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. Brasilier has received several prestigious awards, including the 1952 Prix Florence Blumenthal and the 1953 Prix de Rome. He is also one of only two artists (the other being Pablo Picasso) honored with a retrospective at Saint Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum during their lifetime. He has exhibited works alongside legends such as Picasso, Braque, Chagall and Miro, and he is represented in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).

Hoffbauer was born in Paris in 1875, the son of an Alsatian architect, artist and archaeologist who published Paris through the Ages. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Fernand Cormon and Gustave Moreau, rubbing shoulders with Matisse, Rouault, and Marquet, then won an Honorable Mention in the Salon of 1896 and academic prizes in 1898-99. At the Paris Universal Exposition he won a bronze medal. On a French government traveling scholarship called the Prix National du Salon, Hoffbauer discovered Italy, Greece and Egypt. Then the government purchased Champs de bataille in 1904 (Musée du Luxembourg). On a second scholarship in late 1909, Hoffbauer visited New York where he was greeted by his friend Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), the creator of the "Gibson Girl."
