About the Item
Artist André Strauss was known for painting outdoors, on the motif. It gives his paintings a wonderful freshness and immediacy - you feel as if you were right there, in the grounds of this beautiful villa in Saint Maxime, a few miles from Saint Tropez, on the other side of the bay.
Born 1885 in Paris, André Strauss studied with Masters Luc-Olivier Merson, Humbert, and Ernerst Laurent. A founding member of the Salon des Tuileries, he also exhibited at the Salon d'Automne.
Several paintings by the artist is in the collections of the French National Museum of Modern Art and in the Palace of Fine Arts in Lille.
Our painting is signed at the lower right and dated dated and titled to the verso. The size of the canvas alone is 64 x 55 cm.
The hand carved frame was done by a master carver or framer who signed it with his initals!
