"The Tides", is a symbolist oil painting on canvas by Andrée Bars.
In this composition at once cosmic and contemplative, the artist explores the invisible motion that connects time, the sea, and the cosmos.
Beneath a starry sky where silent planets drift, symbols gather like fragments of a dream: a spiral seashell, a clock caught between two worlds — its Roman numerals frozen as the tides of the cosmos stand still — and a fragile paper boat adrift upon a blue drapery that becomes sea, sky, and slumber all at once.
The seashell evokes the memory of the oceans, the echo of depths where life itself begins.
The clock measures a time that no longer flows, as if breathing in rhythm with the universe.
The paper boat, delicate and ephemeral, speaks of passage, return, and the gentle inevitability of cycles.
Here, time is no longer linear — it folds and unfolds like a wave.
Between horological precision and marine poetry, Andrée Bars invites us to contemplate what, beyond stars and tides, remains motionless — the very mystery of existence.
Andrée Bars is a French painter who trained for four years under the American hyperrealist master Ted Seth Jacobs, himself heir to the techniques of 19th-century academicians.
Through this rigorous apprenticeship, she learned the art of painting in its purest tradition — a mastery she continues to uphold today.
Each of her works is built upon at least three layers of oil paint, following the methods of the old masters.
Her technical precision, however, serves not mere imitation but imagination: she applies the discipline of hyperrealism to surrealist ideas.
Though her paintings reproduce reality with extreme fidelity, they cannot be confined to the simple labels of hyperrealism or trompe-l’œil.
Her art distinguishes itself by a mysterious softness, a subtle poetic aura that gently captivates the viewer.

Andrée Bars
Andrée Bars is a French painter. Having been strictly trained for four years by the American hyper-realist painter Ted Seth Jacobs, who himself inherited 19th-century master’s skills from his professor, Bars learned the profession of painting in its purest tradition. She still applies these ancient master’s techniques on her art. Each painting contains at least three layers of oil paint. Bars apply her skills of hyper-realism on surrealist ideas. Although her paintings copy the reality to the extreme, they can not be qualified in a simple term of hyperrealism nor of Trompe-l'œil style, her artworks distinguish themselves for a kind of mysterious sweetness they convey to the spectator.
