About the Item
"Alien" is an oil painting by contemporary hyper-realist painter, Anthony Mastromatteo. A clean, powder blue backdrop sets the tone for this playful painting. A page torn from a comic book is taped to the blue background, the tape peels upward, ready for the viewer to try to pull it off the wall. Inside the comic, shows Superman, removing his trench coat and gentleman's hat, revealing his superhero costume. The text blurb above him says "No longer any need for this disguise!" This statement claims a popular acceptance of the super-hero, who is in-fact, not human, but an "Alien" from another planet. There are undertones and themes that can be drawn from Mastromatteo's composition, and the title he chose for the subject.
This painting comes unframed.
Signed by the artist on verso, stretcher bars. "Anthony Mastromatteo 2017" "The Other (No.1): ALIEN"
Anthony Mastromatteo’s (b. 1970, OH) thoughtful and hilarious trompe l’oiel paintings deliver dramatic pop art laced with political messages and philosophical questions. These paintings not only mesmerize us with his precise detail, but captivate our intellectual attention. Mastromatteo, cleverly, uses humor to disarm the viewer, making gentle suggestions that invite the viewer to investigate their own interpretation of the media he uses. Mastromatteo is a master of light, shadow, and realistic texture. Upon viewing these paintings, we see how they are truly a “trick of the eye”. Viewers are often deceived, and look at these paintings from the side, hoping to find the paper’s edge coming off the surface, only to discover it is, in true trompe l'oeil fashion, completely 2-dimensional.
The arts have been an integral part of Anthony Mastromatteo’s life for over 25 years. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Princeton University in 1992 led to a five year position at Christie’s auction house in New York City in the American Paintings, 19th Century Paintings and Maritime Paintings and Objects departments. As his exposure to the art world expanded he began studying the practice of art after work at the Art Student’s League in New York City. In 1997 he made the transition to full-time art study at the Water Street Atelier, a school of art practice based on the methodology of the French Academy and the French atelier system of the 18th and 19th centuries, under the tutelage of Jacob Collins. In 2002 he finished his studies and made the transition to working as a professional artist. He has worked solely as an artist since that time. He currently has representation with galleries in New York City, Los Angeles and Cleveland.

Artist Biography from the Artist: "I have made art for as long as I can remember. When I was in high school in Beaumont, Texas, I would draw constantly. During high school, I took classes in painting, drawing, and design at the Beaumont Art Studio, Beaumont Art League, and the Art Institute of Houston.
During the mid to late 1980s, I studied art, concentrating on design, drawing, sculpture, and painting at Lamar University and the MFAH Glassell School of Art on a scholarship. After leaving school I worked on the installation crew at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. That was a great time, because I was working with some talented people who are still making art today – David McGee and Tierney Malone to name a couple. While I was there, I learned museum quality handling of art and installations.
I began making art with found materials while attending Lamar University, mostly wall-dependent works and collage from found wood, fabric, paper, and paint. I have always been a scavenger, partly because I never had much money and partly because it is a medium that I identify with. I continue working on assemblage and collage today, incorporating drawing, painting, printmaking, and traditional sculpture techniques into my pieces, often using objects that have a storied history to myself or others. I incorporate objects from others in my own work and for commissioned works of art.
I worked at Judy Youens Gallery from 1990-1993, doing whatever needed to be done. She specialized in glass, so I became an expert in handling fragile works of art, which included installing them, building custom crates, and preparing them for shipping. While at the gallery I was also on the Art League and Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts boards. I designed, curated, and installed over 100 exhibitions though the 90s.
I studied with a master carpenter from 1994-1999 and learned how to use a variety of hand and power tools, sourcing material, building techniques, as well as repurposing and fixing just about anything. This has served me well. Combining my art and design skills with my new building skills, I designed dozens of home remodels from single rooms and outdoor deck tops and complete homes from the ground up. I still do design work and consultations.
I served on the Art League of Houston Board of Directors from 1991-1994, where I was president of the Artist Committee and a member of the Executive Committee. In 1997 I moved into an empty shell of a warehouse and immediately finished out the space with a large studio, kitchen, full bath, and bedroom loft. My Barnes Street Studio was next door to artist Harvey Bott...
