A pile of luxurious fabrics, a velvet jacket and trousers, a silk tie on a wicker sofa covered with brocade: the painting is a riot of fabrics. Black on red, two points of light, the jabot and shirt collar highlight Dr. Dirigoni face. Our man is handsome, nonchalant, leaning back in his seat, comfortable in his clothes, formal in his choices and with a certain “je ne sais quoi” that conveys an air of ease and overt dilettantism.
His receding hairline, fresh complexion, still youthful, crossed by a weary, indifferent gaze, respond to a hand whose skin tone is tinged with green. Subtle stigmata added by Antony Troncet, who sees the doctor in the man? Or is it a portrait of a decadent character, a Huysmanian hero, or even a portrait of a Dorian Gray in the process of decay?
Antony Troncet, a sought-after portraitist, was commissioned by Marie Bonaparte, a poet honored by the Académie Française. He leaves us with a painting that fits into this era, where the evocation of a life and the expression of customs are part of a subtle, muted aesthetic.
Painting awarded a prize at the Paris Grand Palais Champs Elysée exhibition in 1903, under number 1698.
