Signed lower right, 'Anton Sipos' (Bosnian-American, born 1938) and dated 1974.
A substantial Impressionist oil painting showing two young women relaxing in a sunny garden with a peacock and a peahen.
Born in Bosnia, Anton Sipos began drawing at an early age and left home in his teens to work as a film animation artist. He achieved immediate success with his first work, "Surrogate", which won an Academy Award for best-animated short subject under the direction of Yugoslav animator Dushon VuKotic.
In 1964, Sipos moved to Montmartre to study at the École de Paris. During this early period, Sipos exhibited widely and with success including at the Salon d'Automne and Le Salon d'Artistes Françaises. While in France, he made numerous painting trips to Provence, Giverny, Rouen and the Cote d'Azur as well as to Italy.
In 1970, Sipos arrived in California where he painted landscapes of Los Angeles and marine scenes of the harbor in San Diego. He also worked as an artist for the film industry, most notably with Eleanor Ettinger Studio in New York where he was given the responsibility of transferring Norman Rockwell's original oils to lithographic plates. In 1977, Sipos held his first major New York exhibition at Jasper Gallery and, since then, has continued to exhibit widely and with success throughout the United States. We are pleased to offer a large and luminous figural work dating to the artist's middle period.
