Description
An early and fully representative work by Antoni Pitxot, painted in 1968 during the period when the artist developed his iconic anthropomorphic stone figures. The Stone Lovers presents two mineral presences intertwined in a single sculptural mass: a lighter, golden, eroded figure facing its darker counterpart, emerging like a sentient shadow.
The surface is magnificently worked with dense impasto, geological textures and a sculptural brushwork that transforms stone into body, emotion and allegory. The palette mixes warm ochres with deep greys, enhancing the dramatic tension between the two figures and creating a poetic, silent, unmistakably Dalinian atmosphere.
A work of strong wall presence, perfect for collectors of the Cadaqués universe and of Catalan surrealism at its most intimate and symbolic.
Short artist biography
Antoni Pitxot Soler was one of the major Catalan surrealist painters of the late 20th century and a close collaborator of Salvador Dalí. Trained from adolescence, he exhibited in Lisbon, Bilbao, Barcelona and Madrid, receiving several awards. In the 1960s he settled permanently in Cadaqués, where he developed his celebrated stone-based compositions, creating allegorical and dreamlike figures with great technical richness. He served as director of the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres and vice-president of the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation. His work is represented in important museums and private collections worldwide.

Antoni Pitxot
Dalí's friend and collaborator and member of a family of artists, the artistic production of Antoni Pitxot (Figueres, 1934) starts from a realistic brushstroke of expressionist roots that, When the 1960s arrived and having decided to settle permanently in Cadaqués, he left to immerse himself fully in surrealism. Through a complex creative process ―the artist elaborates sculptural models made with stones from L'Empordà and Cadaqués that, taking into account their anthropomorphic significance, become the starting point for his pictorial work―, the exhibition traces an itinerary through the different themes worked on by the painter, such as the allegory of music or the allegory of memory and time. Born into a family with an artistic tradition and closely related to the Dalí family (it is his uncle Ramon Pitxot, who makes Dalí discover impressionism and determines his vocation as a painter), he lives with his family in San Sebastián from 1946 to 1964. There he has as a drawing teacher Juan Núñez Fernández, who had also been one years before Dalí in Figueres. In the 1950s, while practicing expressionist realism, he made himself known with various exhibitions in San Sebastián, Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao or Lisbon. In 1964 he settled permanently in the family home in Cadaqués. In this period, his work undergoes a decisive turn, since it directs attention to the study of the objects in his environment: the stones of Cadaqués, from which he gives rise to anamorphic, anthropomorphic and allegorical visions, with which he connects with a current underground of Western painting that ranges from certain masters of Italian Mannerism to Surrealism. Also during these years, rebuilding old family ties, she began her relationship with Dalí, which culminated in a lasting friendship.

📝 Work Description
In The Petrified Origin, Antoni Pitxot presents a haunting and timeless vision of a single, eroded rock suspended in a dreamlike, undefined space. The stone, modeled with sculptural precision, appears to float over a subtly reflective surface, devoid of background or narrative context. Its porous texture, cracks, and shadows evoke a fossilized memory — a silent relic of geological time.
Painted in 1967, this piece exemplifies Pitxot's unique visual language, developed through his practice of collecting stones along the Costa Brava and transforming them into anthropomorphic and symbolic compositions. The result is both surreal and solemn, an ode to nature’s memory and the enduring presence of the inanimate.
👤 About the Artist
Antoni Pitxot i Soler (born in Figueres, 1934 – died in Barcelona, 2015) was a Catalan painter deeply rooted in the surrealist tradition. Coming from an artistic family —his uncle was Ramon Pichot, a friend of Picasso and Dalí— Pitxot trained as a draughtsman and painter from a young age. In the 1960s, he settled in Cadaqués, where he developed his distinct artistic universe.
His paintings revolve around stone as a symbol of permanence, transformation, and memory. Pitxot created sculptural assemblages from real coastal stones and later immortalized them in oil on canvas. His works often hint at human figures, ancient myths, and allegories of time.
🎭 Connection with Salvador Dalí
Pitxot was not only a close friend of Salvador Dalí but also one of his closest collaborators. Dalí admired his work and invited him to co-design the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. After Dalí’s death...

Description
Battle of Constantine is a symbolic and fragmented composition that showcases the dreamlike world so characteristic of Antoni Pitxot. Through an array of rock-like, anthropomorphic forms, the artist constructs a mythical and dramatic landscape that suggests an epic confrontation. The vivid pink sky and tactile textures reinforce the visual tension, evoking ruins, bodies, and reliefs that seem to emerge directly from the earth.
In this piece, Pitxot applies his meticulous technique and unmistakable visual language, where ambiguity is a tool for the viewer's imagination. The boundary between figure and landscape blurs, creating a poetic vision that feels both ancient and surreal.
