About the Item
Oil painting on canvas, framed in a rich gilt frame decorated with acanthus leaf motifs. The work depicts an elegantly dressed female figure, portrayed in profile in a lush formal garden. The woman, wearing a light-catching red hat and a powder-colored dress, wears black gloves and a shawl down her back. The atmosphere is serene and evocative, with the woman's gaze seemingly lost in thought.
The background features landscape painting that creates depth: a tranquil pond, a classical statue, and an imposing colonnaded building. The painting style recalls the artistic currents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a brushstroke that enhances colors and lights.He was born in Castelbottaccio (CB); in 1883 he moved to Naples where, after classical studies, he attended the academy. Twenty-one years old, he traveled to Paris where he came into contact with the Impressionists.
He returned to Naples in 1903 and remained here for the next two decades, during which time he married Alfonsina Di Mauro, who bore him several children (some of whom would follow in their father's footsteps); he worked continuously, called upon to fresco shrines, theaters, and public buildings, also appreciated for his watercolors. In 1923 he was in Rome, where he painted, among others, a portrait of Matilde Serao. He returns to Naples after three years. The war forced him to move to his hometown with his entire family, and here he remained until the end of the war.
Without ever abandoning color, he passed away in Naples in 1949 leaving some unfinished works.
He was an eclectic: in addition to being a painter, he also tried his hand at sculpture and writing. The themes of his paintings are drawn gradually from the various stages of his life: so in Paris in the works from 1901-1902 (Autumn in Paris, Sun in Paris, Parisian Café, Boulevard Bonnes Nouvelles, etc.). The Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, Posillipo, Mergellina, Pompeii are themes in many works from 1923 to the late 1930s; landscapes of Molise and Abruzzo in works from the 1930s. Portraits accompany the entire span of his life; there is no shortage of still lifes.
