About the Item

Banwari Lal Jangid Mewar School, Maharaja on horseback with guards Size: 37.2 x 28.2 cm Natural Pigment on Handmade paper 20th Century This is a fabulous miniature painting by one of Rajasthan's master miniature painters, Banwari Lal Jangid who trained for many years in a traditional Atelier in Jaipur, learning the skill of making the paints from natural pigments and neem sap and the essence of how to make a miniature painting. Once art for the courts in India, miniature painting as a traditional art form is sadly in decline. Traditional techniques and knowledge are being lost as the new generations of artists are either turning to work in new industries or more contemporary art practise. This painting shows the skill of the artist, techniques passed down from artists working for the royal courts in cities such as Jaipur and Udaipur. The quality of the faces and the close work painting using a single hair brush with natural grey stone pigments mixed in cips; mussell shells with iridescent surfaces ensures there are no lumps or imperfections in the paint. A fabulous example of a 20th century Indian miniature painting by one of India's leading Miniature and Pichvai artists.
